What would you consider your signature style?
My style of tattooing is more illustrative and often whimsical, I like to put in loads of detail with linework and create texture with whip shading. I mainly work in black and grey but also love working in colour. I prefer to tattoo anything fantasy/whimsical and creating girl heads with flowing hair and usually nature themes (or macabre themes!)
Tell us about your experience and influences:
I started my apprenticeship late in 2015, which lasted for about 2 and a half years. Although I would say I’m mostly self taught, I was helped out a lot by the talented artists I worked alongside.
I’ve always been drawing, since I can remember. I was always that weird kid that would be drawing dragons, monsters and anime. If I had access to paper, I would be scribbling something weird and would get into trouble all the time! When I was 14/15 I tried applying for an apprenticeship in my hometown – I was turned down of course – but they gave me so many great tips to help me possibly get one, when I was old enough.
I eventually went to college, studying art, design and fine art. I then went to university, studying illustration for 3 years. I still knew I wanted to be a tattooist or – failing that – something in the art industry, so I worked really hard to get better; creating a portfolio that I could be proud to show off. I then got myself an apprenticeship, where I worked myself to the bone, learning this amazing craft.
And now – being a tattooist – that drive to get better, develop my style, make work that I’m proud of, and that my clients are proud to wear, really drive me day to day. It’s really humbling that people want to get tattoos by this weird arty kid, it still blows my mind and I’m so thankful to those wonderful people.
I take influences from everywhere, but mainly illustrators – and tattooists with an illustrative background – but I’d say the main ones are Rob Borbus, Hannah Flowers, Miss Juliette, Amie Cornwell, Helena (bobsvhett), Maria Dimory, Erica Williams, Kelsey Ellis, Kate Selkie, Lozzy Bones, Leesu, Carina Anne, Ruby wolf and Gustav Dora. I’d list more but the list is already pretty long!
