We appreciate that getting a new piercing can be a little daunting, especially if it’s your first one. So, with this in mind, we’ve come up with a few handy do’s and don’ts, for when it comes to taking care of your new piercing.
Things to Do:
- Use sterile saline solution to clean your piercing, twice a day is recommended. Showering is perfectly fine, allow the warm water to run over your piercing. This will soothe and help keep the piercing clean and free of materials.
- Keep all bedding and any close contact materials clean, this includes clothing, hats, masks etc. If everything in contact is clean, the risk of infection is much smaller. Keep clean!
- Make a follow-up appointment after the piercing has healed, around about 6 weeks after the piercing was first made. Here we can discuss longer term jewellery choices and make sure everything is healing nicely.
Things to Avoid:
- Don’t use anything other than sterile saline on the piercing. This includes creams, ointments, antiseptics etc.
- Don’t play with your piercing. Touching and playing with your new piercing will increase the risk of infection and prevent the piercing healing properly.
- Avoid swimming for the first 2 months and avoid wet hair covering your piercings for prolonged periods, such as whilst sleeping.
- Where possible prevent applying too much pressure to the piercing. For instance, try and ensure that you’re sleeping on your back or the opposite side, if you’ve had an ear piercing. This will prevent any crookedness whilst healing.
